In a surprise move, legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli has announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. The decision comes just before India’s highly anticipated five-Test tour of England, which begins on June 20. This follows the recent retirement announcement of India’s Test captain, Rohit Sharma, earlier this week.

Kohli’s Stellar Test Career

At the age of 36, Kohli leaves behind an impressive legacy in Test cricket, having played 123 Tests for India. In that time, he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. Reflecting on his journey, Kohli shared on social media, “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.”

A Decision for the Future

Although Kohli retired from T20 internationals in 2024 after India’s World Cup victory, he is expected to continue playing in one-day internationals. His Test debut came in 2011 against West Indies, and he went on to captain India in 68 Tests, securing 40 victories—the most by any Indian Test captain.

Kohli spoke emotionally about the unique experience of playing Test cricket: “There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no-one sees but that stay with you forever.” He further added, “I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude—for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.”

A Glorious Record in Test Cricket

Kohli’s career is marked by numerous accolades, including 30 Test centuries. Only cricketing legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar have scored more Test runs for India. Kohli also holds the record for the most Test centuries by an Indian captain, with 20 to his name. However, his recent form has been a subject of concern, with his last Test century coming in November 2023, after a gap of 15 innings over 16 months.

Kohli’s Impact on Indian and Global Cricket

Kohli’s departure from Test cricket marks the end of an era. Though his numbers may not rival some of his contemporaries like Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson, Kohli’s elegant batting style, particularly his cover drive, has made him one of the most aesthetically pleasing players to watch.

As a captain, he modernized India’s Test side and achieved more Test wins than any other Indian captain. Beyond statistics, Kohli played a pivotal role in ensuring that Test cricket remained relevant in the face of the growing dominance of T20 leagues worldwide.

The Future of Indian Test Cricket

Kohli’s retirement, along with Rohit Sharma’s, signals a new phase for the Indian Test team. The upcoming Test series in England will see a different, evolving team, with the void left by two of the most iconic figures in Indian cricket. While the shift may be difficult for fans and players alike, it opens the door for new leadership and fresh talent to emerge.

Even with Kohli stepping away from Test cricket, his legacy will continue to inspire generations. In One Day Internationals, he remains a giant, often regarded as the greatest of all time (GOAT). Test cricket, however, will undoubtedly feel his absence, as his presence on the field was always must-watch entertainment.

Kohli may be walking away from the longest format, but his influence on the game will never fade.
